Course Overview

Scope of M.Sc. (Agri.) Agronomy

Agronomy is a field of agriculture that focuses on soil management and crop production. It deals with principles, practices of soil, water & crop management. It deals with methods which provide favorable environment to the crop for higher productively with the efficient use of soil fertility, water, labourer and other factors related to crop production. An agronomist develops efficient farming and crop growth practices that allow farmers to maximize their crop production.
After successfully completing M.Sc in Agronomy, students can opt for jobs as Agronomists, Agricultural Scientists, Crop Production Specialist, Crop Scientist, Lab Technician, Assistant Professor, Research Fellow, Farm Associate, Farm Manager, etc. Students can also opt for PhD in Agronomy and pursue research.

Scope of M.Sc. (Agri.) Entomology

An Entomologist investigates the environments of insects as well as their biological evolution. As an entomologist, responsible for discovering and studying new insect species, developing methods to control hazardous insects, and researching and controlling insect-borne diseases.
Entomologist strive to prevent destroying beneficial insects. The widespread use of certain beneficial insects for the biological control of dangerous insects and weeds has received a lot of attention. Currently, entomologists focus their study on "effective pest management," which takes the environment into account, rather than "pest control," which primarily focuses on pest management regardless of environmental consequences. Entomologists analyse biology, roles, and control of insect pests, beneficial insects such as plant pollinators, parasites, and predators, as well as other insects and arthropods (for example, spiders and mites).
Agricultural Entomologists research methods to protect crops from pests while also protecting beneficial species of insects such as bees. They may develop better sorts of "integrated pest management," in which some species are used to control others, thereby minimizing the demand for pesticides, so contribute in the area of creation and implementation of insect pest management and insect sustainability.

Scope of M.Sc. (Agri.) Genetics & Plant Breeding

M.Sc. (Agri.) in Genetics and Plant Breeding is the science of modifying plant features to create desirable qualities and, as a result, increase the quality of nutrition in human. Aspirants will largely research technical techniques for improving varieties and genetic stocks, changing the genetic make-up of plants and developing novel breeding strategies to increase food, feed, and fibre production.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Indian Nationals with a four-year Basic degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Forestry and /or related /allied Sciences with an Overall Grade Point Average of 6.00 (60 % Marks)in the basic degree are eligible to get the admission.

  • Indian Nationals with foreign degree, children of NRIs/Foreign Nationals with a similar or equivalent degree are also eligible to apply to the Institution for admission but are to be approved by the University of Mysore.

Course Benefits
Agronomy
  • Better protection against climate change.
  • Local methods of crop protection against pests.
  • Harnessing methods such as agroforestry to improve field yield.
  • Increasing nutritional content of crops and so on.
  • Agronomy PG students study Major Subjects in Agronomy and crop science programs emphasize on biology and chemistry, as well as math and statistics. Major course work includes soil chemistry, genetics, entomology, plant physiology, plant breeding, and soil fertility.
Entomology The job profiles/ Employment opportunities after Master of Science in agricultural entomology are Pest control technician, Researcher, Law enforcement officer, pesticides and insecticides companies, seed companies, fertilizer companies, bio fertilizer companies and biological control base companies, Professor, agronomist, agricultural entomologist, Forensic entomologist, survey entomologist, commercial entomologist, product manager, research officer, farm manager, agricultural officer, quality assurance officer, sericulture organization, environmental organizations, botanical gardens, chemical manufacturing enterprises, beekeeping, veterinary research, horticulture, food science, and many other areas of environmental studies and so on .
Genetics & Plant Breeding
  • plant breeders may create plants that are disease and pest resistant and tolerant to specific temperature and soil conditions.
  • Plant breeders can make it feasible to grow in places where it would otherwise be impossible. They can expand the crop species' producing regions.
  • They can boost agricultural yields and can be economically cultivated with minimal resources.Because it is such a vital instrument in increasing global food security, there is a lot of demand for this sector, and there are many career possibilities.
  • They can be recruited as farm managers to supervise other staff and oversee the operations on the farm.

  • The seed business, crop research directories, crop plantation facilities, plant breeding centers, nurseries, agriculture ministries, genetic engineering firms, research laboratories, biotechnology corporations, Professors in agriculture universities for teaching and research opportunities, for seed testing and certification officer positions in government agencies, can work as Plant Geneticist, Plant Breeder, Agronomist, Farm Manager, Assistant Professor, Associate Researcher, and other positions.

  • India is a leading agricultural country. There is so much scope in agricultural sector in India.Almost 60 percent of the Indian workforce is involved in agriculture The importance of agriculture is growing rapidly and thereby is increasing the job prospects in the field of agriculturefor more details
